Lightly clean the end of the brushes as well but don't get carried away. 4) Check for continuity between the two slip rings (with brushes removed). 5) Check for shorts to ground from each slip ring. 6) Reinstall brushes and confirm continuity between each before connecting anything back up. This will confirm proper contact to the slip rings. 7) If you know how to check a diode, check the diode rectifier with the four wires unhooked.
